2015 is the bicentenary of the battle of Waterloo, one of the most famous battles in history. The duel between Napoleon and Wellington is a fascinating story. The battlefield of Waterloo has been visited ever since. There is much to see in this historic place

The Battle of Waterloo was just the climax of the story On this tour we will visit all of the battlefields of the s of the hundred days, Ligny, Quatre Bras, Waterloo and Wavre and follow the final act in the career of the Emperor Napoleon.

We will explore too the story of the English in Brussels and of the social life that was the background to the Waterloo Campaign.

Your guide will be Frank Baldwin, historian, battlefield guide and humanities tutor at City Lit: the London based Centre for Adult Learning.

Day 1 – Travel to Waterloo  2 July 2015

  • 09.00 Depart UK for Dover. Ferry Dover/Calais.
  • Lunch on board at own expense.
  • 14.30 ETA Calais.
  • Drive to Belgium
  • 20.30 Arrive Hotel Tour “Waterloo Ball” themed dinner followed by orientation brief with optional dancing!

Day 2 – Ligny and Qutre Bras 3 July 2015

  • Breakfast in hotel
  • 09:00 Depart hotel
  • AM. Follow the path Napoleon took and the delaying battle by the Prussians from Charleroi to Ligny
  • PM The Quatre Bras battlefield, fought on 16 June and the withdrawal to Waterloo .
  • Ligny
  • 17.00 Visit the Grand Place in Brussels for free time in city centre and supper .
  • ETA Hotel 20.00

Day 3 - Waterloo 4 July 2014 

  • 09:00 Depart hotel for Waterloo battlefield.
  • View battlefield from French point of view
  • Visit Le Caillou, the Emperor’s HQ.(at own expense)
  • Marshal Ney’s HQ
  • Hougoumont Farm
  • Picnic on the battlefield.
  • Lion Mound and Panorama.
  • Mercer’s Ridge
  • Wellington’s HQ by the elms
  • Visit Wellington HQ in Waterloo (if time permits at own expense.)
  • 17.00 Visit the Grand Place in Brussels for free time in city centre
  • ETA Hotel 20

Day 4 - Wavre and Return to the UK 5 July 2015

  • Breakfast in hotel
  • 0900 depart
  • AM Follow the Prussian story.
  • Visit Wavre battlefield,
  • Follow route to Waterloo Battlefield.
  • Depart for Calais. Shopping opportunity.
  • 18:15 Ferry Calais/Dover
  • 20:00 ETA London

Napoleon on Board the Bellerophon, exhibited in 1880 by Sir William Quiller Orchardson. Orchardson depicts the morning of 23 July, as Napoleon watches the French shoreline recede.
