Battlefield Guide Training

There are few places where someone can learn how to become a better battlefield guide. The Guild of Battlefield Guides will validate competences, but does not train guides.  These courses have been developed by an experience battlefield guide, who has served as Education member of council for the Guild of Battlefield Guides.

Introduction to Battlefield Guiding

The Introduction to Battlefield Guiding Course lasts for two days and is an introduction to the theory and practice of battlefield guiding. It introduces the competence frameworks of three bodies accrediting guides. The course introduces the competences combining knowledge of military history, presentation skills, duty of customer care and business.

It is a taster for anyone seeking to lead walks or tours and wishing to plan a personal development programme.

 This course covers the following topics:-

•An introduction to battlefield guiding

•Competency frameworks: The International Guild of Battlefield Guides, the Federation of European Tourist Guides Affiliated Organisations, e.g. – UK Blue Badge and Liberation Route Europe.

• of The military history knowledge, presentation skills and duty of care skills and knowledge expected of a competent battlefield guide

•Legal obligations

•Working as a guide

•Developing a personal learning programme.

The course is based on the helping students to identify their goals, understand the reality of the standard needed, identify the options they have to achieve these and make a personal development Plan.

Summer/Winter Schools

The aim of the summer/winter schools is to allow students to develop battlefield guiding competence to provide candidates with the experience and competences to attempt the International Guild of Battlefield Guides Accreditation. By the end of the course students will have undertaken several battlefield presentations under tour conditions, planned itineraries, developed customer service strategy for common tour problems and have an awareness of the legal and commercial issues facing guides.
